Pi4J - Verify the Hardware is Properly Wired

Intall Pi4Java

    mkdir roller/
    cd roller/

    wget http://pi4j.googlecode.com/files/pi4j-0.0.5.deb

    sudo dpkg -i pi4j-0.0.5.deb                    
                    

Running the Hookup Tests

    sudo java -classpath /opt/pi4j/lib/pi4j-core.jar:onebeartoe-roller-1.0-SNAPSHOT-jar-with-dependencies.jar org.onebeartoe.roller.test.RollerTest
                    

Expected Results

If the battery, motors, motor shield, and Raspberry Pi wiring is correct, then the two front motors run for a couple of seconds, then the two back motors run for two seconds, as expected results of the RollerTest program.
